Abandoned homestead at Pinon

Colorado state highway 90 heads west out of Montrose and continually downgrades to a mud or shelf rock cowpath. The official state maintenance degrades to county to absolutely none. Snow isn't plowed through the winter across the Uncompahgre Plateau, but for half the year the road is quite passable in backroad standards. After 50 miles or so one reaches a name on the map called Pinon. There is no grouping of houses or even ranches. The only place the name can be found is at the Pinon Cemetery. Most of the lands in the area are now in the public domain. Approximately a dozen miles beyond Pinon you reach pavement again and eventually more maintained state highway 90 and the towns of Nucla and Naturita. This part of Montrose County is a world away and isolated enough to have a courthouse annex.
