We're very sad to report that Zuzu passed away late Sunday night. She had been doing really well just the day before, eating tons and being social and friendly just like she was on the block. But she had terrible diarrhea which was dehydrating her, so we gave her fluids and a B12 shot. The fluids helped but her poop wasn't improving. Sunday she seemed off. She didn't eat nearly as much and was less social, sleeping in her cubby or on the floor. We checked on her regularly, offering different foods to try to keep her eating. But her appetite was definitely not where it had been. Still we figured we could get it all sorted at the vet the next day. But when we checked around 10pm she was already gone. We really thought we had more time.
We had sent out blood and fecal samples for testing and finally got the results yesterday. As expected she had severe kidney disease and hyperthyroidism, as well as other markers that put her firmly in the 'not good' category (ironically, she tested negative for FIV and FeLV.) If we had gotten to her sooner there's a chance we could have mitigated these issues but it's impossible to know for sure.
We're sorry her story is ending so soon, we really thought we could give her the retirement she deserved. She touched many people's lives. The photos here are just a few we've collected from her caretakers and the people we worked with to round her up. If you have any pictures of Zuzu please DM to us, we'd love to share them here.
