This Great Lakes self-unloading bulk carrier was built as hull #417 by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co., Manitowoc, WI for the American Steamship Co. (Boland & Cornelius, managers), Buffalo, NY. She was launched May 9th, 1953 as the John J. Boland (3) and is one of three near sister vessels built by this shipyard.
