While all the excitment was going on at the Marina ; the trees on the Welcome Island Light were standing on their Tip Toes trying to see what was going on,

An Optical Illusion or Mirage caused by temperature variances called a Fata Morgana or a Superior Mirage .

A fata morgana is created when cold, dense air near the Earth's surface is trapped beneath a layer of significantly warmer air aloft, known as a temperature inversion. This causes light rays from distant objects to refract, or bend, downward toward an observer standing on the ground.

A superior mirage occurs when there is a temperature inversion; the air below the line of sight is colder than the air above it. Passing through the temperature inversion, the light rays are bent down, and so the image appears above the true object, hence the name superior.

What is the difference between superior and inferior mirage?

Mirage | International Cloud Atlas

A mirage may occur as a lower mirage (inferior mirage) over intensely heated water surfaces, soils, beaches, roads, etc., or as an upper mirage (superior mirage) over snow fields, cold sea surfaces, etc
