The 78 year old George N Carleton breaking the slip open at Richardson's Main Elevator. In the video Watch her Bow ride up on the Ice similar to the James Whalen did decades ago using her weight to crush the 24 - 36 inch ice. You can see the clear blue ice underneath the white layer when sheets of ice are pushed up by the Carleton. Its a chore for the old Gal but she does the job.
This classic tugboat was built in 1943 by Russel Brothers of Owen Sound, ON as the HMCS Glenlea for the Royal Canadian Navy. In 1947 she was sold civilian to Foundation Maritime and renamed Bansaga. In 1964 she was acquired by Lakehead Tugboats Inc. of Thunder Bay, ON, where she was repowered and renamed George N. Carleton. She is busy in the ship assist trade in Thunder Bay.
