L.E.S. Jewels - R.I.P. Brother
Heard that L.E.S. Jewels overdosed & died today. Knew this guy for YEARS and he always chill when I spoke with him.
He definitely had his moments - shitting on the sidewalk in plain sight of passersby, stopping traffic on Avenue A by standing in the street & refusing to move, dropping trou & flashing tourists - all manner of hijinx. He was Old Skool NYC East Village "local color" that's for damn sure.
I remember when he was sober too, as he was this day, when I shot this picture - 64 days sober. I recall being amazed because he was frequently so wasted & out of his mind. It never occurred to me that he would ever get sober for any extended period of time.
One of my favorite memories of him was when the New York Dolls played inside the long-closed E. Village Tower Records. He was outside, without a ticket but listening & watching through the window with a giant smile plastered on his face.
