USS Intrepid
The BOMB ELEVATOR
To reduce the risk of catastrophic internal explosions from a lucky enemy hit, ordnance—ammunition, bombs, torpedoes and missiles—was stored in protected compartments deep within the ship. When an aircraft was ready to be armed for a mission, one of several heavy duty bomb elevators, like this one, was used to convey ordnance to the hangar or flight deck.
