Badlands Gumbo Clay 9509 A

Cracked gumbo clay in The Badlands of South Dakota in Springtime.

In early May, there was still water in low and marshy areas, and a few plants were growing where it would soon be bone dry. In some places, a spot that deceptively looked solid and dry was actually a thin crust over thick, gooey mud that made a mess and threatened to pull-off your boots.

The cracked mud, sometimes stained red, often had interesting patterns.
