Rusty Ghost Town Window 2732 A

Window and rusted corrugated steel wall in the semi-ghost mining town of Darwin, California, elevation 4,800, several miles off highway 190 before it descends into Death Valley.

Darwin was named after Dr. Darwin French, who explored the area with prospectors in the 1850s. The town was founded in the 1870s after silver was discovered. Soon, the population grew to over 1,000. Today, about 50 people live in Darwin.
