Crater Lake in Klamath County in Southern Oregon is the deepest lake (almost 2,000 feet) in the United States. It was formed about 8,000 years ago when the 12,000 foot volcano Mount Mazama exploded. At an altitude of over 8,000 feet, it is covered in snow about eight months a year.
The lake is intensely blue due to its great depth and clarity. There are no streams running in or out of the lake. The water level is maintained from precipitation only, mostly snow melt. The lake gets on average 43 feet of snow every year and the record is 73 feet.
