O.O. Howard House and Magnolia Petals 247 A
The O.O. Howard House on Officer’s Row at Fort Vancouver was built in 1878 for General Howard while he was the commander of the department. Famous people such as Ulysses S. Grant and President Hayes were guests at the house. At the time it was built, it was considered one of the finest houses in the Pacific Northwest.
The general had an important and varied impact on American history. A Civil War commander with mixed battlefield success, he marched with Sherman to the sea, then ran the Freedmen’s Bureau for former slaves after the war.
Today, he’s probably best remembered as the leading U.S. Army figure in the tragic Nez Perce war, where Howard and his army chased and fought Chief Joseph and a caravan of 250 Nez Perce warriors and 500 women and children over five months and 1,200 miles. The book "Thunder in the Mountains" is a great read on Howard, Chief Joseph and the war.
