Morcher's Pork Store

Morscher’s Pork Store in Ridgewood, Queens has sadly announced that it will be permanently closing on February 3, 2024. This wonderful family-owned shop is known for its sausages and meat specialties originating from Gottschee, a German enclave in Slovenia and was founded in 1957 by Joseph Morscher. When we took this exterior photo in 2008 we met and spoke with Herbert Morscher, who continued the tradition with his family’s recipes but brought it into the 21st century with state of the art high-tech smoked meat processing equipment. Herbert “Herbie” Morscher, the third-generation family member and co-owner of the shop along with his partner Peter Kotarowski, shared that the decision to close was due to an expiring lease and a quadruple rent increase enforced by their third business partner who owns the building they are located in but has not been “actively working” in the shop for a long time due to health issues.

We will always remember finding this gem on a small side street in Ridgewood and falling in love with its amazing neon and handpainted signage and its homemade Tirolerwurst and Bratwurst. We included our photo of Morscher’s Pork Store in our latest book “Store Front NYC: Photographs of the City’s Independent Shops, Past and Present” (swipe left for 2nd photo of page spread). Please let us know if you have visited this amazing shop and what you will miss most about it.
