"Still Life"

I'm not 100% sure what still life is. Especially comparing the genre in its traditional & contemporary sense. I'm trying to figure out what distinguishes a photo of an object or items to a good still life; lighting, composition, subject matter?
This is a learning process for me so please feel free to comment (Preferably constructively) on any image within this set.
