277/365 and Stranger #18

This is Derek Ridgers who is my number 18 of my 100 strangers project. Derek is a photographer so was happy to be part of this project. Now I have to come clean... stranger.. yes because I don't know him. He did however photograph a friend of mine some thirty years ago as part of a subculture project that he was undertaking. We spoke a little about that project and the work he was exhibiting when this portrait was taken.

This was a bit of a challenge because it was a noisy environment with lots of people in close proximity...lots of people!

It was also a good learning experience.

What could I have done differently:

I would have liked to have liked to have framed him a bit closer or I could have shown more of the environment. My problem is still not taking a number of photos because I don't want to take up the persons time.

Reviewing and reflecting on the portrait the one thing I should have done was make use of the tilting back screen. I use the viewfinder almost all of the time and only very very rarely use the screen. Derek is clearly taller than me and if I'd used the screen I believe I could have taken a more flattering professional looking portrait. Something I definitely remember if I shoot anyone else that much taller than me.
