Ash Stranger #014 / 100

This is Ash who agreed t be #014 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page

I've not shot a stranger for this project for ages because I have been tied up with other things, mostly work!

I also still don't feel that comfortable walking up to strangers and starting that conversation. I kind of guess the longer the gap between strangers portraits that difficulty always remains?

So, I'm testing out a Fuji XT1 for a street photography project I'm undertaking and I was curious how this mirrorless camera with the 18-55mm lens would cope with portraits.

So here is Ash.

Why did I want to photograph him?

He simply looked smart and stood out. The way he was dressed kind of reminded me of a cross between a New York City style & yet being terribly English.. He also had one of those friendly & inquisitive faces.

I took six shots and although the background was not busy, it was still a bit distracting so I settled for this close up.

In hindsight I would have liked to get a little more of the knot of his tie.

The ISO setting for this image may also seem very high but I was deliberately shooting with the intention of pushing the histogram to the right with the intention of pulling down the highlights. The aim was to be able to negate the exposure difference and shadow created by the brim of his hat. This was really a bit of an experiment that seems to have worked.

Asking Ash what advice he would give his 18 yer old self: "Do what ever you want to do".

Would he add any further advice to his 21 year old self: "Be yourself!"

Ash, thank you for taking part in my 100 strangers project. If you see this portrait I hope it meets your approval.
