Stranger # 10

This is Dave who agreed to be my stranger number 010 0f 100.

Ten feels like a milestone, a long way to go but none the less a bit of an achievement.

Dave is a biker who arrived at The Ace Cafe in London for an event in aid of the National Assosciation for Bikers with Disabilities. Dave was there to support the event along with numerous other bikers.

I went for two reasons, one was obvious and that is my photography the other is that I like bikes. I'm also extremely lucky to have made an almost full recovery from several breaks to my spine and pelvis along with injuries to my shoulder, wrist and hand.

Dave pulled up on a trike that he built and was selling. A crowed gathered to look at the trike and ask questions. There was no photo opportunity to be had at that time so I hung about in the hope everyone would bugger off.

That didn't happen until Dave was going into the venue so it was a mad dash to the door to try and catch him before he went in. I caught him just in time, well I had to shout but he turned. Again just a very straight forward introduction, told him he would be perfect for my photo projects and he agreed.

We chatted for a while about his trike, bikes in general and bands. It turns out we know people in common. Small world.

Other than one previous stranger, Dave is probably the first person that I didn't feel like I had to rush to get the photos.

I was wrong, more trikes and bikes started to arrive and the meant they would be parking where I wanted to stand; patiently they waited for me to take a few shots. I guess I could have taken a few with a different background but the ace cafe has so much history for bikers and is doing its part for sub-cultures in general I really want to fit the place into the background to give a sense of location.

Frustratingly the sunlight was so bright I could not see the little screen at the back of my camera and I didn't know if I had made the shot I wanted until I got away from the venue. They looked okay on the back of the camera but I needed to see them on the computer and………. I don't think I did too badly under the circumstances. However I would have liked the ACE to be positioned more to Dave's left and I would have loved to have asked the bikers milling in the background to move out of the shot. The people I held up from parking were clearly not that concerned about being held up because they could see what we were doing. It was simply pressure that I'd put on myself to get out of their way. I wish I'd just taken those two or three shots extra.

Thank you Dave for agreeing to be part of my project.
