Blue Swimming Crab - Portunus armatus

A much prized and tasty catch which is widely fished in the Indian and Pacific oceans. I have never seen one in the daytime, only on night dives (as here). Their large size - up to about 20cms across the carapace - and the huge spread with the massive claws extended does not hinder their ability to swim which they do at a terrific speed. Here a male is clasping a female in a pre- or post-copulatory position.
