The Narrows Strait and Its Bridge
by Jim Lambert
Strait: a narrow passage of water connecting two seas or two large areas of water. The "Narrows" is the water between Brooklyn/Long Island and Staten Island, New York, and it connects Lower New York Bay on the south, to the northern Upper New York Bay. The strait's southern end is spanned by the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge which, when completed in 1964, was the world's longest suspension bridge. It's main span is 4,260 feet long.
