Armchair Traveling - An Achiote Tree Near the Amazon River, Peru
Today's edition of Armchair Traveling takes me back to our visit to Peru during which we spent 4 days in a resort on the Amazon River near Iquitos. We ventured out on the river several times a day to visit villages along the river to view the way of life in this tropical, wet area. The flora and fauna were fascinating. This is an Achiote Tree, the seeds of which are used to make annatto, an orange-red condiment and food coloring. The flavor is described as slightly nutty, sweet and peppery.
