PS RYDE was constructed by William Denny on Clydeside. She was launched in 1937 by the wife of the Southern Railway General Manager Lady Walker. During the Second World War she served with the Royal Navy as HMS RYDE. She returned to passenger services after the war and continued to serve the nationalised British Railways until withdrawal in 1969. She was bought by two Isle of Wight businessmen who berthed her at Binfield Marina on the River Medina near Newport. She reopened in 1972 as the RYDE QUEEN BOATAL offering restaurant, bar and accommodation. Following a fire in 1977 she was rebuilt and reopened as a nightclub which continued to trade until closure in 1989. Since then RYDE has gradually decayed and despite an unsuccessful preservation attempt has now started to collapse.
