Lockheed Skunkworks picnic, 1945

These are the Skunkworks families of 1945, who worked at Lockheed's Skunkworks in Burbank, California. Many of these workers were on the design team for the P-38, the later projects, ( a flying wing) and eventually the U-2 and SR-71, in the sixties. My grandparents are in this picture as are my mother and her two sisters.

Chester Emery, was an electrical engineer in the program, and worked for the Company ( directly under Clarence Johnson) from 1938-1975. he was responsible for much of the electronics used in nearly 40 years of aircraft development, from the P-38 until the L-1011 and beyond. Clarence hired Chet from his Compton Radio shop, paid for his college and Kept him as an electrical engineer under his supervision until they both retired in 1975.

He worked at Groom Lake, Rye Canyon and Burbank.

My father also worked at The Skunkworks, on the F-104, and A-11/12.

With my working on the U2 and SR-71 at Beale, I became the third generation working on these aircraft. I know of no others who have these aircraft as a family tradition, besides Kelly Johnson.

Photo dated 1945 based on the apparent age of my aunt who was born April 04, 1943. She looks about 2 in this picture. Probably just about VJ day, August 1945.
