Feeding the Stingrays

Feeding the Stingrays:

Grand Cayman is known for a shallow water where tourists can feed stingrays. In the early nineties, the rays were very large such as these two who measure over 4 feet in diameter, and over 8 feet from tip to tail. SCUBA diving in fifteen feet of water, the dive master would remove from a pocket a bag of chopped fish, and moments later rays would come like feral cats, such as these two who came gliding silently from deep water like demonic phantoms.

Holding out chopped fish, the rays would wrap their white velvet soft undersides around the diver and suck the food from our hands, occasionally biting the hand that fed them. Only a hard pinch—they have no teeth.
