I first came across this street sign in 1986 - it is advertising a dry-cleaning chain, by the way. The 'Coon refers to the English translation of 'Tanuki', or 'Japanese Racoon Dog'... a widely loved character. Yet I must admit to some disappointment 19 years down the line that this (albeit inadvertently) offensive sign still exists... This one in Nishijin, Kyoto.
