Syringa vulgaris or better known as the Lilac or Common Lilac. Part of the olive family of plants and native to the Balkans, the lilac is a very popular flowering shrub world wide. A deciduous bush, it can grow to 22ft (7m). Most varieties are hybrids cultivated in France a century ago. Sweet smelling and colorful, the bush only flowers for a short time (as little as a couple weeks) in April and June in North America.
