Getting to Know You

From my trip to the Netherlands...

The town I stayed in the Netherlands had a charming foot and bike path that intersected a small farm. Viv and I would go on walks and see various animals, which made her very happy. One afternoon, cows were in the pasture. Now, I’m a little nervous around cows. My grandpa was a farm veterinarian and he told me stories about farmers who were hurt (or worse) by their own cows. When she made a bee-line for them, even though there was a protective fence, I was apprehensive. Viv stood there, holding a piece of bread (it worked with geese 😂) trying to get them to come to her. As she pressed herself against the fence, the cows came closer and closer, seemingly as curious about her as she was about them. It was such a sweet interaction- almost like babies tentatively getting to know one another. We spent an hour like this, my kid and the cows, gently meeting. It was an experience I’ll never forget.
