For Robert
A little over a week ago, Macy's 10-year old friend Robert left this world after a car accident. The sudden loss of Robert has been very painful for everyone who knew him. Death is never an easy thing to face, but when the tragedy involves a child, it leaves a tremendous hole in a family, a community, a school, and in the hearts of the children who were his friends. As hard as it is for adults to grapple with the "why" of death, it comes as an especially hard blow to children, who are largely unprepared to lose someone their own age.
Macy was very close to Robert and participated in his funeral, releasing a dove. Since his death and the services that followed, she has been trying to cope by keeping a journal and seeking ways to memorialize him. When I met her yesterday, she was wearing a badge with his face on it, as way to honor him and also maintain a connection. We decided to keep the symbolism from the funeral of the caged bird released and flying away, just as Robert's soul has been set free from his earthly body.
This session is a gift to Macy and to Robert's family. By creating art in his memory, we hope to find a therapeutic way to deal with the grief of his passing as we also seek to honor a young life taken too soon.
