Merlin

A male Merlin perched high atop a ponderosa pine snag, above British Columbia's Thompson River. With the bloodied feathers of his last meal still visible on his sharp bill, it's evident this small but fierce falcon is a very skillful predator.

Having located a mated pair setting up a territory in the early spring, I returned a few weeks later and waited beneath a throw blind on a small cliff ledge to achieve this close, eye-level perspective.
