A 1939 Copper
In GB the 'One Penny' coin has often been called 'a copper'. Those now in circulation are much smaller than this coin and their monetary value is much smaller too. So small that suggestions have been made to withdraw them - but at present they remain, often to be deposited in Charity boxes.
80 years ago in 1939, a penny would have bought your Daily Newspaper. Not so today. The 'i' newspaper a copy of which the coin lies over now costs 65p. The price difference is even greater than it appears. In 1939 there were 240 pence to the £1 whereas in 2019 there are 100 pence to the £1. That seems to be a price 160 times larger! Not only have prices changed in these 80 years but the style and content of the Daily Newspaper is very very different - more pages, more advertisements, less news, more opinion! Newspapers from these different dates really can't be compared.
1939 was a significant year for the World.
2019 is a significant year for GB and Europe.
I have a very small collection of these old 1d coins. This seemed to be the one in best condition with King George Vi depicted. Not sure how I came to keep it!
It isn't in good condition so I felt happy enough giving it a good clean and polish before photographing.
