An Afghan child aims his sling shots at the remains of the Russian Cultural Centre, in Kabul. The marble-clad complex, which included a swimming pool, two theatres, classrooms, a library and exhibitions spaces was built in 1982 as a showpiece of the Soviet occupation. It was abandoned in 1992 and destroyed in the civil war which gripped Afghanistan after Soviet forces withdrew and their puppet regime crumbled. The Russian Embassy in Kabul said work to build a centre on the same site would start in 2011.
