I recently read that you have to be extra careful with using flash near young children. They don't have the reflexes in place to handle the bright and sudden light.
For this occasion, I have built a small soft box that fits around the head of my 580EX. The flash head points upward into a 10" (25cm) diameter cylinder. It backlights a circle of thick drawing paper that points in the direction of the subject. You can actually see the reflection of that circle in Hanna's eyes.
