Remembering JR
J.R. scours the coast near his home to look for anything of value.
He recovers empty bottles, the slippers he currently wears, and some discarded items.
The things he find, he places inside a red sack he lumbers around on his small back.
Eventually he will sell it as scrap
He will give everything he earns to his mother.
He told me he doesn’t go to school.
He added that he hasn’t seen a classroom all his life.
He was very young when he started working…helping his family in little ways he can.
My questions were answered in a straightforward manner.
Evidently hardened by the difficult life he lives, he speaks stoically….as if wise beyond his years.
I bid goodbye as he sat and ate on the shore…alone with the pack of food my companion gave him.
As I was about to walk away, I turned back to show him the pictures I took.
His eyes lit up when he saw himself on the LCD.
For the first time that day…I saw the little boy inside him……
