Hengifoss

One says that there are 10,000 waterfalls in Iceland, Hengifoss is one of the tallest, with a drop of 118 meters. The particularity of Hengifoss is the impressive surrounding gorge, Hengifossárgljúfur, that features a succession of red clay layers sandwiched between basalt layers. Downstream, the river Hengifossá flows into a narrow gorge and then broadens into a basalt amphitheater that frames the 30 meters high Litlanesfoss.

The red layers of Hengifoss were formed by successive volcanic eruptions, when lava flowed over the acidic soil on the surface of the previous basalt layer and then iron reacted with oxygen, creating this reddish colouring in the intermediate layer.
