love on the Mayan Riviera
I spent the last week in Mexico, in a small fishing village named Puerto Morelos, south of Cancun and the madness of fellow tourists.
The town was impossibly adorable, full of wonderful friendly people who learned our names and waved to us when they saw us. Four of us rented a condo on the Caribbean, with views of our own white sand beach and pool. We ate like locals in a small hut/local restaurant - panuchos cochinitas for lunch several days in a row. We drank lots of Sol, we played in the ocean, saw tropical fish (even a manta ray), visited Chichen Itza (which is a hellhole flea market now), climbed the "acropolis" at Ek'Balam, and swam in a limestone cave, a "cenote" with water over 200 feet deep, a zip line, bats, and tropical birds. After swimming in the cenote we even played with a spider monkey.
We saw a military vehicle with a dude with the biggest gun I've ever seen in my life, just driving down the road. We fed a stray cat. We rubbed the bellies of countless stray dogs. We were so hot and sweaty that we had to shower a couple of times a day, even with air conditioning.
I also went to a wedding - the real reason I traveled to Mexico. My friends Erika and Paul tied the knot and then we danced the night away with a small group of friends and family. I got to spend time with my girlfriend Cocoa and her husband, and finally met their darling baby boy.
Overall it was an incredible week. Now the fun of sorting photos begins...but I couldn't resist sharing this. Love these two - and love the memories of the warm waters, ruins, breezes, and cold drinks with good friends.
