Dreams of Ragnarök

The northern lights hold a fascination for me. As a boy growing up in America's deep south, the Aurora Borealis was something I had only read about in books and wistfully appreciated in photographs.

There have been many things I've dreamed about in my life that were a sad disappointment when I finally experienced them in person but the Northern Lights were not one of them!

This shot was taken on Iceland's western Snaefalsnes Peninsula on a chilly winter night. The foreground is a 2" deep tidal flat that was serendipitously placed to reflect the breathtaking scene that exploded and danced across the sky before me.
