Foothills Fantasia
I drove up and down the Foothills Parkway in the pre-dawn darkness a few weeks ago trying to decide on a viewpoint for the sunrise over the Smoky Mountains. I hadn't had the chance to scout during the daylight and as the sky started to lighten, I got progressively more nervous.
Eventually, I circled back to one of the first spots I had seen and frantically got everything set up, focused and dialed in. I didn't have much of a foreground but I figured it was what I deserved for my failure to scout ahead. I took a deep breath and started to relax just as the sun started to peek over the peaks. And then I noticed Mountain Laurel blooming not more than 50 feet away down a little trail...a wonderful foreground for the sunrise.
I grabbed my tripod and stumbled down the path just in time to capture this scene.
Yeah, I'd like to tell you that I had pre-visualized and planned this shot months in advance...but, well...
