encroaching
Twenty-something years ago when I moved to this town it was relatively small. I'd lay in bed at night and listen to the coyotes yapping as I drifted off to sleep. There was a farm down the road where the roosters would crow and wake me up in the morning, often well before sunrise. We lived on the outskirts of town back then.
Today we're still in the same little house but the field behind us where they used to grow corn is now one huge apartment complex as of earlier this year. The roosters are all gone, they've been replaced by people living in condos where the roosters used to poop. And their crowing has been replaced by the sounds of highway traffic which also starts well before sunrise. The coyotes have moved on or have been eliminated, most people around here think that's a good thing.
I disagree, of course.
Looking down on what is now a city the other night as I chased meteors in the sky I was reminded of what the town used to be and wondered where it will stop. These dark hillsides are harder to build on than the fields in the valley but once those are all gone the hillsides will be next, I suppose.
As you might have guess I'm not too happy about 'progress'. But, for now at least, I still have the mountains where I can get away from it all.
