Located on the Ohio River in the Cincinnati suburb of California, Ohio. This was taken during my second tour of the Cincinnati Water Works facility with one of our meetup groups. This time I went with the Cincinnati Camera and Photography Club meetup group. At the facility, they pump water from the Ohio River, purify and distribute it all around the Greater Cincinnati area including parts of Northern Kentucky. The inlet is on the Kentucky side of the river. The water travels under the Ohio through a brick lined "pipe" installed in the late 1800's to the pump station in this photo. There the world's four largest triple expansion steam engines moved 30,000,000 gallons of water every day from 1906 until they were replaced by electric pumps in 1963. The water is pumped to two nearby reservoirs where large particles are allowed to settle out prior to the next step in the purification process. Other than regular lubrication, the steam pumps operated virtually maintenance free for 57 years and were quieter than the current electric ones. They still sit on the pit floor some 125 feet below ground level where this shot was taken.
