171/200 - Samay
I returned to BuskerFest Toronto the next day to see the event in full swing, after my brief preview yesterday during setup.
My eye was quickly drawn to a craft stall being run by this young woman with amazing face-painting. Meet Samay who quickly agreed to being photographed for 100 Strangers and who explained that her remarkable face paint had been done by a business further down the street by the name of Kromatik.
I learned that Samay was running the family craft stall and that all the crafts being sold were hand made in Ecuador. Samay’s family is from Ecuador and they make frequent trips there to visit and to buy crafts which they sell at events and festivals like BuskerFest.
When she is not helping run the family craft business, Samay (emphasis on the final syllable) is at university studying Environmental Protection. We spoke briefly about the importance of protecting the environment and I commented that I had photographed another woman with a degree in Environmental Protection a couple of weeks ago at the LiveGreen festival.
Samay was very warm and friendly and happy to help with my project. We fit the photos in between customers who were coming and going from the stall, looking at, asking questions about, and buying crafts. This photo was taken inside the tent which had open sides for light to get in. I asked Samay to move to the side of the tent so that I could use the beautiful blanket as a background. (I think I would have preferred a simpler background that didn't "compete" with Samay's decorations so much but that wasn't an option.)
On my way back past the stall after having walked up Yonge Street, I saw that Samay had stepped out in front of the stall to show something to a potential customer and when I asked her to turn toward me for one more photo if her in front of the stall, she happily did so. I have included that photo as a comment photo.
Samay provided her email so I can send her a copy of the photo. I hope she likes it.
Thank you Samay for participating in 100 Strangers. You are now Stranger #171/200 in Round 2 of my project.
