Davidson
I had just discovered a glassy enclosed sidewalk on Toronto’s King Street and realized it would make a good photo location. There was good foot traffic due to the many nearby office towers so I looked for an interesting subject. A photogenic young Asian woman declined my request in a very polite manner, explaining that she was late for work. I sent her on her way and told her I hoped she could make it in time. Before long I saw this man approaching with a backpack and I hoped for the best. Not only did he look like a good subject visually, but he looked like an interesting person to meet. His hat set off his good looks with a stylish note. I stopped his progress and explained my request. He said “Sounds fine. I’ll do it.” Handshake time. Meet Davidson.
I explained the location I had in mind and he said he could spare the few minutes I had requested. He seemed to understand my portrait concept and quickly agreed to divest himself of his backpack and position himself as I had requested. I did my usual and tried to avoid talking to him while shooting, other than to compliment his pose and express pleasure with how the portrait was going to turn out. I rarely make my beginner’s mistake any more of carrying on conversation while photographing and losing lots of shots to movement and open mouths.
Davidson is from Dominica in the Caribbean (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominica) which is sometimes referred to as “The Nature Island.” Reviewing websites once I got home I learned that Dominica is currently trying to recover from tropical storm Erica which hit on the 27th of August, 2015 and caused widespread damage. Current emergency aside, Dominica sounds like a wonderful destination for a winter vacation to escape the Canadian winter.
Davidson has lived in Canada since age 5 and seemed a talented and enterprising man. He has his own company www.dconcept.ca which specializes in branding and image consulting, especially in the art and entertainment fields. On top of that, he is a fitness trainer and teaches yoga and meditation. Our encounter was fairly brief because I could tell by his pace when I met him that he had places to go. His message to the world is a somewhat enigmatic “Time will tell.”
In the few minutes we spent together I sensed a friendly, quiet confidence in Davidson. He seemed "comfortable in his own skin."
Thank you Davidson for pausing in the middle of your day to meet and participate in my Human Family photo project on Flickr. I enjoyed meeting you and I hope to visit your homeland in the future; it sounds beautiful.
This is my 41st submission to the Human Family group on Flickr.
