Octopus posing

This octopus was close to shore, at a depth of about 25 feet, in a place where divers begin and end their dives. The odd thing about this octopus is that it did not flee, it did not slither into a crevice--it stood upright, it wandered about, and was casual concerning its enthralled audience. My explanation hinges on the fact that octopi are known to be smart and clever. My hunch is that has had plenty of time to learn that divers will not hurt it, they just pay intense attention for a little while and then they move on. I think it was posing and showing off!
