A Volcano Erupts A Galaxy
Capulin Volcano formed 60,000 years ago, and today it is one of 150 volcanoes in the 8,000 square mile Raton-Clayton Volcanic Field. Capulin rises 1,300 feet above the surrounding plain and its rim is 8,182 feet above sea level. The volcanic field became active 9 million years ago.
The Milky Way formed approximately 14 billion years ago.
I met Bob Maynard at a nearby campground so that we could photograph the Milky Way above Capulin. The weather prediction was for a clear night sky, but the impending storm (it was snowing the next day) did not get the memo.
We saw both elk and deer on our way back to the campground and also an official "Bear Crossing" sign near the headquarters for Capulin Volcano National Monument. The monument maintains a paved road to an overlook at the top and a 1 mile hiking trail that goes around the rim, providing excellent views in every direction.
A separate trail descends into the vent of the volcano.
