Big Sky Blue Nose Stripe on Great Northern Railway 2nd Generation EMD Hood Units 1973
Roster shots of locomotives only get you so far when you're researching details and paint schemes. This overhead view of BN 2519 shows how the top edge of the white nose stripe on the GN's Big Sky Blue paint job actually rolled over the top of the nose on EMD 2nd generation power. The white paint wasn't on the flat of the nose. Just the long radius of the bend between the vertical and horizontal surfaces of the nose assembly. Now go back and look at my model paint job again of BN 2519. Whichever side you're viewing, you can't see the white paint on top of the nose on the opposite side. But it sure came close to being on top of the nose. As a custom painter I was able to replicate this rather exactly. Most modern models that are factory painted tend to get this wrong. Maybe these images will help future production efforts.
