1912 Duluth-Superior Harbor Chart

Sometimes the best way to understand what was, is to look at maps from an earlier period, to see how things developed. This one shows a partial view of the Duluth-Superior Harbor in 1912.

Now, please compare and contrast it with this earlier view from 1903: www.flickr.com/photos/jeff_lemke/32129240612/in/photostream/

In particular, pay attention to Rice's Point and the navigable channels within the harbor. It's amazing how much work was done here between 1903 and 1912.

The Soo Line's Superior ore dock shows in this view. Can you spot it? Meanwhile in Duluth, the Northern Pacific's new yard complex and roundhouse on Rice's Point now makes the original LS&M facility that used to be just east of it, quite pale in comparison.

Special thanks to Michael Delaney for providing the connection to the NOAA Office of Coast Survey that provided us with the larger map from which this customized view originated.
