Railroad Car Tie Downs on the Car Ferry Incan Superior on October 12, 1984

Here’s a close-up view of the chains and ratchets used to secure rail cars to the deck. Believe it or not, during good weather, the ship usually ran with just a couple of cars tied down at either end of each track. But air brakes and handbrakes were available on each rail car too so there was always more than enough effort put into securing the deck load to make sure it stayed on the boat.
