Omaha Railway Passenger Depot at Duluth, MN. September 1962

Here's a late afternoon view of the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railway's Duluth, Minnesota passenger depot just off of what used to be 5th Ave. West in downtown Duluth. The Omaha depot supported passenger trains of the Omaha (that eventually became part of the Chicago & North Western System) and the Duluth, Winnipeg & Pacific Railway. The TOFC ramp to the left belonged to Northern Pacific. Today this area is consumed by freeway and a variety of highway ramps that bring tourists into what is basically the activity center of downtown Duluth during the summer and early fall months. Just behind the photographer's back is Duluth's Union Depot where tourist trains still depart from as part of the North Shore Scenic Railroad that operates between Duluth and Two Harbors. This view is from September 1962 but the little station's days are numbered.

Take note of the two metal braces on the roof of the baggage area. Now take a look at this turn-of-the century image taken from roughly this same angle: www.flickr.com/photos/jeff_lemke/16242425247/in/album-721...
