Northern Pacific Railway Budd RDC on Pokegama Bridge 9 in 1963
Late in the day 1963 view of the NP's passenger train to Carlton crossing over Pokegama Bridge just west of Central Avenue tower that can be seen in the background. The photographer took this photo from Cemetery Road that was a perfect vantage point to shoot trains crossing the Pokegama River. The puffing smokestack and silver water tank in the background belong to the Twin Ports Dairy that was still in operation at this time. If you look closely at the bridge you'll notice that the first dozen or so bents on each end have verticals made from poles while the rest of the bridge supports are made from dimensional lumber. Part of this bridge was heavily damaged in 1952 when part of the fill connecting the ends of the bridge to land collapsed unexpectedly. It is believed that the poles show the newer post-1952 repairs from this situation. The dairy has long since been abandoned and every trace of the Great Northern’s Central Avenue interlocking tower and Northern Pacific’s Pokegama River Bridge has vanished as well.
