Northern Pacific Railway & Soo Line Cuyuna Range Iron Ore Dock — Superior, WI — 1950s

The steamship Charles L. Hutchinson of the Pioneer Steamship Company was launched in 1952 and was 642 feet long. The boat made many trips to the Northern Pacific Railway's gravity ore loading dock near East End, Superior, WI. This is where the bulk of the iron ore mined on Minnesota's Cuyuna Range was shipped to by NP and Soo Line under a joint operating agreement. The last boat to load here was the vessel Chicago Trader on October 17, 1969. The largest load out of the dock during its last season of operation was 13,892 tons of iron ore that went into the Raymond H. Reiss. The dock did not reopen for season 1970.
