GN Ore MTY at Carlton MN in June 1968
Often, I am humbled by the generosity of other people. Such is the case here. The late, Skip Nelson wanted me to use some of his images in my projects and this was certainly one of his best. Skip loaned me many of his slides to share. I'm really happy that he sent me this one. It shows a Great Northern Railway ore MTY crossing the NP’s 3rd Subdivision line at Carlton, MN. in June 1968. The interlocking at Carlton controlled traffic where the GN’s Mesabi Division mainline intersected the NP’s 3rd and 4th Sub-Divisions. The GN's ore line is covered in, well, ore. The red oxide color is utterly unmistakable. It's fun to see that Skip shot a perfect 4 unit set of locomotives in the GN's simplified orange and green paint job of 1963. By the time this shot was taken many engines were sky blue, still many others in the old original orange and green. So to find a set of four units all in the same paint job was actually quite unusual. The ore wagons are on their usual assignment, running back and forth between Allouez and Kelly Lake on ore trains. The trailing SD7 is going to Kelly Lake where it will work the yard assignment there. SD7s and SD9s were ferried between the two terminals, usually as trailing units, on the ore MTYs and road ore trains. Thanks for sharing this one, Skip. You are missed and you are the best!
