Burlington Northern SD7s on the Allouez Ore Docks 1970

This view is looking due west on the Northern Pacific's First Sub-Division that ran from Superior East End to Ashland, Wisconsin. In the distance is the Northern Pacific's lone iron ore dock in Superior. And just above are a pair of Electro-Motive SD7s that belong to Burlington Northern—a new railroad only months old. Burlington Northern absorbed all of the former Great Northern and Northern Pacific lines. BN 6010 and 6007 are pushing loads of iron ore up onto the former Great Northern ore docks—which in 1970—is the largest iron ore tran-sloading facility in the world.

Photograph by Russ Porter. Although it's been used in a variety of publications without proper credit, Russ shot this picture during one of his many trips from Milwaukee to Duluth where he visited friends and relatives. I enjoyed a bunch of meals with Russ in his home town. He was a true fan of the railroad scene in the Twin Ports, and a real gentleman, and quite the artist too. If you ever met him you were fortunate to have made his acquaintance. Thanks, Russ, for sharing all of your Twin Ports photographs with me.
