GN Central Avenue Manipulation Chart June 17, 1943
Every interlocking tower housed an interlocking machine that was operated by throwing levers linked to the track switches, signals, and derails. In order to know which levers corresponded to a particular track route the lever man working inside the tower relied on this manipulation chart to do his job. The manipulation charts were usually framed and mounted behind glass, then hung on the wall above and behind the levers. Westbound route B-A required levers 33, 31 and 8 to be thrown in sequence. Eastbound route D-H was a lot more work, requiring levers 30, 31, 36, 34, 33, 35, 10, 12, 11 and 39 to be thrown in sequence. This chart shows every route through the Central Avenue interlocking on June 17, 1943.
